Sundance Film Festival: Asia is an expansion of Sundance Institute’s programming in the region, further championing and promoting visibility for independent storytelling before a wider global audience. Through unique programs such as labs, grant funding, and special projects undertaken with key partners, Sundance Institute serves as a leading advocate for the independent filmmaking community.





This year’s Short Film Competition is open to Indonesian filmmakers and aims to discover, nurture and bring attention to emerging local talents to a global platform. “At Sundance Film Festival, we strive to find new films and artists we have not supported yet, amplified through efforts like this competition as part of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival: Asia. It’s so exciting to find voices and stories new to us that we might share with equally excited audiences,” said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short Film, Sundance Film Festival.

2021 Sundance Film Festival: Asia invites all of the Indonesian filmmakers to submit their best short films to the world’s most notable short film competition.

  • Film Director(s) of the Entry must be a valid Indonesian Passport Holder.
  • Running time of each entry is between 3 and 20 minutes.
  • Production date of entries must be completed on or after 1 January, 2019

Kim Yutani

Director of Programming, Sundance Film Festival

Kim Yutani is the Director of Programming of the Sundance Film Festival; she assumed that role in 2018. As Director of Programming she oversees all aspects of the program from the film curation to the Beyond Film talks program. She began programming short films for the Festival in 2006, and became a feature film programmer in 2009.

Mike Plante

Film Programmer and Documentary Filmmaker

Mike Plante is a film programmer and documentary filmmaker. He started working for film festivals in 1993 and is currently a Senior Programmer for Short Films at the Sundance Film Festival, where he has worked since 2001. He also makes short and feature documentaries, which have screened at film festivals including Hot Docs, Full Frame, and MoMA Doc Fortnight.

Heidi Zwicker

Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival

Heidi Zwicker is a Senior Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival, focusing on international and U.S. Narrative Feature Films, Midnight and Shorts. She has been contributing to various Sundance Institute programs for over ten years, beginning with the Feature Film Program, International.

Joko Anwar

Indonesian Film Director, Producer, Screenwriter, and Actor

Joko Anwar is an Indonesian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, he worked as a journalist and film critic.Anwar first rose to prominence for co-writing Nia Dinata's 2003 hit Arisan! which won five awards at the 2004 Citra Award. He then made his feature film directorial debut with the romantic comedy Joni's Promise in 2005, gaining a Best Director nomination at the 2005 Citra Award. He has since directed a wide range of genres: the noir thriller Dead Time: Kala (2007), psychological thriller The Forbidden Door (2009), supernatural horror Satan's Slaves (2017), and live-action superhero Gundala (2019). His film Impetigore (2019) had its US premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Susanti Dewi

Indonesian Film Producer and Head of IDN Pictures

Susanti Dewi is an Indonesian Film Producer and also Head of IDN Pictures. During her career, Santi has produced 10 movies including Moammar Emka’s Jakarta Undercover (2017) and Terbang Menembus Langit (2018). Santi oversees all aspects of creative and business in the studio she runs. Her upcoming movie is Balada Si Roy, which will be released soon in cinemas.

Amanda Salazar

Head of Programming and Acquisitions, Argo

Amanda Salazar is the Head of Programming and Acquisitions at Argo. She is also the Programmer at the Northwest Film Forum, a two screen arthouse in Seattle and the co-Director of Camera Obscura, a pop-up cinema and event that celebrates experimental cinema. Previously she was a Programmer with SFFILM and before that, the VP of Acquisitions at Fandor.
